Hokusai & the iconic wave

Hokusai & the iconic wave

For a long time, I was using the word "Hokusai" like if it was the name of any kind of "amazing expressive wave" in arts and crafts. Not until recently, I remembered that Katsushika Hokusai is the name of the Japanese ukiyo-e artist who created "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" and not the name of the wave it self. I always get excited about re-discovering information.

Recently as I found some old digital prints on elastic fabric I had in my archive from a fashion project in 2018. For this digitally printed fabric, I had used one illustration inspired by these waves and it ended up becoming the "Sprayed Hokusai" scrunchies where you might be able to notice some details. I was exposed to Japanese art in 2005, while researching for a project in design undergraduate school in Athens. Even though in order to understand Japanese culture I had to really dive deep in a very different mentality and culture, I admired the spirituality I found in art and poetry.
